We are a group of first year architecture students called Mild Mess. We present our first installation Political Furniture, A Satirical Talk Show. The installation attempts to highlight the implicit hierarchy present in furniture through the exaggeration and juxtaposition of chairs. These chairs hold contrasting power roles and dynamics inherent in their form and representation, culminating in an attempt to playfully use the back and arm rests of a chair as a mask for ones identity. The chairs are placed at 45 degrees to one another, characterizing the angle of communication on talk shows and connecting these two completely opposing power positions by one singular coffee table for conversation. The scene is placed within a square set to highlight the intention and hope of these pieces to be photographed (with today's obsession of the square instagram photo), as well as the theme in which this conversation is subsequently framed within.
